Many people simply don't have enough space at the back of the jaw for wisdom teeth to erupt normally. When that happens, they can come in at an angle, stay partly buried under the gum (impacted), or push against the neighboring molar — any of which can cause pain, swelling, infection, or crowding of teeth nearby.
